An In-depth Analysis of the Costumes of House Lannister in ‘Game of Thrones’ 1/2

As the ruler of the kingdom and the wealthiest house in Westeros, the dressing style of House Lannister always reveals the atmosphere of money and power.

Their family crest is a lion, a king in the animal kingdom. Men's clothing on important occasions is mainly decorated with lion head buckles. The three pictures below are wedding looks.

The costumes in the show are designed in units of families or regions. The men's clothing of House Lannister is usually in the following two styles.

Charles Dance, who played Tywin, is 1.9 meters tall, perfectly showing the majesty and demeanor of the head of House Lannister.

When he was stationed on Dragonstone to counterattack Westeros, his costume went black with the entire cast. Although it is pitch black, there are still many patterns of fabrics. Tyrion never treated himself badly. By the way, the King's hand brooch of Tyrion is silver.

In the first scene of the first episode of the first season, Tyrion has long, straight light blonde hair, which is consistent with the description in the novel. Then the hair became curly, darker, and almost brown by the end. It is interpreted by fans as House Lannister in Tyrion's heart gradually disappearing.

The two screenwriters mentioned that they planned to follow the original work at the beginning, but they didn't insist on it when they found it didn't look good.

If you analyze Jaime's costume as the usual routine of Tyrion, you will be in vain. James, as the character changed the most in the series, is definitely an anti-routine because he did not have any clothes of his own.

Jaime has worn 4 armor. In the beginning, he was the Kingsguard, also known as the White Robe because their armor was covered in white glaze.

However, for the sake of the picture, the TV series only kept the white cloak (it's a bit dark in the picture) and a small area of white decoration. Beneath his armor was a dirty beige leather jacket with a lapel, the same style Tywin had worn.

The emblem of the Kingsguard is a crown, carved into the breastplate. After Joffrey came to power, he probably felt that the armor of the Kingsguard was not domineering enough during the period of Robert, so he used antlers and three swords to spell out a new aggressive crown.

At the time shown in the picture above, Jaime came back without his right hand and pride. Cersei got someone to make a golden prosthetic hand to cover his stump. She did it not out of love and pity but hated ugly things.

After returning home, Jaime got a Valyrian steel sword from Tywin, one of the two swords that Ned "ice" melted into. There are three lion heads on the hilt and a square ruby inlaid in the middle, which is a clear Lannister style.

Jaime gave it to Brienne Latter, asking her to use the sword to guard the daughter of House Stark.

However, because the sword was so beautiful, when Brienne met Arya and wanted to take her away, the Hound suspected that she was a Lannister.

James' third armor is from House Lannister. The relief of the lion is quite amazing.

The overall armor in the show pays more attention to aesthetics, and the protective function is relatively insufficient, mainly due to the lack of parts. As we can see in this set, the arms, legs, neck, and underarms are all unprotected. With this level of defense, it is not enough to protect him in a battle.

Lannister armor is another European-Japanese hybrid design. Based on Japanese samurai armor, the decorative elements are borrowed from European Renaissance armor.

It paired with two black leather jackets are common style for Lannister men. The leather texture is high-grade, but there is no decoration beyond functionality.

In the battle between humans and ghosts, they took the throat guards and shoulder armor of the northern soldiers and put them on.

But the 4 armors above are more or fewer uniforms, and the only personal suit of James in the play is a, yes, only a brown leather jacket.

He wore this one when he went to Dorne to rescue Myrcella and he wore the same one to go to the North to support Stark. And he finally wore this one to go to hell with Cersei.

People in House Lannister generally love gorgeousness. Gorgeousness is not only a taste but also a symbol of status and power.

To Tywin or Tyrion, including Joffrey and Lancel who we will mention later, gorgeous clothes are an inseparable part of their identity, whether it is their deliberate pursuit or just unconscious habit.
